Salwar kameez is the generic term used to describe the lower garment developed in different regions. These include the Sindhi suthan, Dogri pajamma and the Kashmiri suthan. The traditional dress of women in Sindh was the lehnga choli, of women in Kashmir was the Pheran  flowing to the ankles, and the peshwaj in Jammu for women, also flowing to the ankles. The traditional dress of women of Punjab was the ghagra choli/kurti/kameez. No one knows when and where the salwar began to be used in the sub-continent. However, the extensive and wide spread use was prevelant in the Punjab with the influence of the Mughals. Punjabis in west Punjab began to wear the suthan. Its use then spread to neighbouring Sindh, east Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir. According to elders, Punjabi women started to combine the suthan with a kurta, and sometimes with a pajamma which would be covered with a ghagra when going outdoors. This tradition, only dying out relatively late in east Punjab
Over time, Punjabi’s discarded the use of the suthan in favour of the salwar to be combined with the kameez. It is this outfit which is common all over the sub-continent. and has influenced dress sense all over India People in Jammu have changed the traditional attire from the peshwaj to the kurta and Dogri pajjamma. The Pheran in Kashmir has been combined with the suthan with some people wearing the Pheran to below the knees. Kashyap Bandhu is regarded as the person responsible for spreading the use of the suthan with the Pheran amongst the communities that resisted to adopt its use, eventually leading to the use of the salwar. In Sindh, the traditional lengha choli became to be complimented with the poro and suthan. Needless to say, the suthan and the salwar is also part of men's wear. Elsewhere in India, Muslim communities have traditionally worn the style of salwar worn by the Mughals combining them with Mughal upper garments such as the jamma.

Shalwar Kameez is worn by both men and women due its modesty with Muslim values, comfort and freedom of movement. Differences exist between Men’s and Women’s Salwaar Kameez.Men’s Salwar Kameez is also known as Salwar Kurta. Salwar a loose flowing Pants/ Trousers narrowing down to the ankle with a draw string at waist to adjust to different waist sizes. Kurta for men is straight cut long shirt/ tunic with slits at sides to facilitate easy movement, is worn over the Salwar.
Salwar kameez dates back to the 12th century since of Islamic or the Iranian era which was then followed by the Mughal empire in the region now called as India and Pakistan. Salwar Kameez is being made with various fabrics like Georgette salwar kameez, chiffon salwar kameez, net salwar kameez, satin salwar kameez, cotton salwar kameez, silk salwar kameez and other fabrics including the latest trend of fusion fabrics which is mix of the above and synthetic fabric. Women's Shalwar is a loose flowing pants narrowing down to the ankle. It has a wide band measuring about 7-8 inches from waist to hips with gathers that at the hip line. A draw string at waist or elastic band helps to adjust to different waist sizes and mainly consists of Salwar, Kameez and Dupatta.

Designer Salwar kameez are made by fashion designers and normally have lots of hand embroidery work which is done in pearls, stones, beads and sequins. Although every designer has its own approach while designing a salwar kameez the basics still remains the same. The designer is known to give various cuts and styles around the neck, sleeves, kameez and churidar of a salwar kameez which can change the complete look of the salwar kameez. Printed Salwar Kameez has a wide range of designs from flowers to polka-dot to abstract to other prints. The latest in fashion are the digital prints on the printed salwar kameez which include variety of colors. South cotton, blend of cotton and silk and pure cotton due to high production of cotton which iscomfortable fabric in the Indian and Pakistani region as it's comfortable to wear in summers. Men wear mainly consists embroided Shalwar Kameez with high colers over the Neck.  Shalwar Kameez traces its origins to the Mongols and was once considered a Muslim Dress.

Salwar Kameez does pass this test and probably because of which it is the most preferred dress by women. Men’s Salwar Kameez is also known as Salwar Kurta. The shalwar spelling seems to be most common in Canada and the United Kingdom, and is the preferred spelling in the Oxford English Dictionary. Salwar seems to be more common in the US and is found at many online stores selling salwar kameez. The word kameez is often spelled with an H, as in khameez.
